Physically... Yes it will FIT. But, no, it won't work. You need a 4r55e from a '95-96.

I am in same situation, it's my only option to fit a 92 manual into my 95xlt , if I at ask why won't it work? Is it purely due to electronics ?

Yes one is hydraulically controlled the other is computer controlled.

Ok have managed to fit the 92 m5odand remove my 4r55e, simply left the obc And joined wiring to let it think the car is in nuetral/park. So it starts . Only issues are as follows, the starter was too close so have added spacers to bring it out , the plate before flywheel was a tad to thick so shimmy off a bit so now there no rubbing of fly wheel or starter,
I don't have the luxury of having a set of manual pedal so I have an engineering shop fabricate a clutch that I can use where the master cylinerE is inside the cabin and not in Engine compartment. I am not using an explore master cyliner but one where same pressure is applied to drive slave which will be used in a pivot action on my fabricated clutch pedal. As for drive shafts transfer box etc all fits exactly same as with my old automatic 4r55e. Ok so I have a gear shifter stick as well as a dead column shift auto lever... who cares as long as I can change gear and drive. The gear lever itself I have had to mod ands bend to fit so I don't need to remove my centre consol

I believe the other posts were referring to an automatic, not a manual. The M5OD will work just fine as long as you change the flywheel and the starter. For your column shift lever, there is a "pin" at the base of it that you can push out and simply remove the lever. Really easy and quick! Good luck with it!

Also the brake/clutch pedal assembly from a manual ranger or explorer will easily swap to your explorer in the same place as your existing brake pedal to simplify things for you.

Car-part.Com I had pedals shipped to me when I did a manual conversion on my aerostar.
