my 92 explorer (auto) has its tranny replaced ( i think it was from a junkyard), problem is when starting off it stays in first gear till 35mph before going into second , also when starting off seems like im starting off in 2nd gear , i manualy put it in 1st and same thing, seems the gear ratio is off , maybe wrong tranny installed is there a number stamped on it to see if the stock tranny (A4LD Auto) and also the tach consantly reads 3000 to 3500 rpm any ideas thx ,

tachs broke
Trannys broke

Search works:thumbsup:

If its staying in 1st gear only when the transmission is cold, then its problably a stuck governor. there are threads about it..

IF thats not it, then it is most likely something bigger in the transmision.

I've also seen threads about stuck tachometers, but I can't remember what they said about it.

The stuck tach is probably a broken solder point on the back, just replace the cluster with a used one for $40 from a yard.

Like I said, flush the tranny, and if something is stuck or clogged that will cure what ails it.

I was also thinking that it might be a sticking governor. They usually stick when they are cold, then slowly feel better when it warms up. A broken or improperly adjusted intermediate band would also create a second gear problem.

it qwouldnt be the wrong tranny, unless the previous person did something horribly wrong.

it sticks in 1st whenever cold or hot shifts at 35mph from 1st to second. feels like it starts off in second gear , i did put shifter in 1st but feels the same. maybe a bad or going bad tranny the original one was blown
