'92 EB
This seems to be the saga continued.. I got the so-called tool to remove the radio out of my daughters 92' EB, the tools are u-shaped and seem to fit. The directions say to insert the tool on both sides until it has grasp the retaining clips, and hold the tool tightly and pull the unit out. It is neither releasing nor is it coming out. What I am doing wrong?

you have to remove the plastic trim around the radio. on the 91 and 92 explorers, it overlaps and blocks the front of the radio once you remove it, the radio will just slide out.

92' removal

Thanks for the reply. This is my first time with this EB, now how does the trim come off? I looked earlier thinking that there must be a screw or something, but it looked like it just snapped into place, and I was not sure that I wanted to do that. Also is it REALLY necessary to mess with the negative battery cable before I re-attempt this? Thanks......

yes, disconnect the negative terminal.

ok here's how to remove the plastic panel:

open the ashtray and take it out. remove the T15 screws that is on the bottom of the panel. there should be two of them. if you dont have a panel removal tool, get a butter knife and pry the panel out to release the clips holding it in place. then just pull the panel away from the dash.

almost forgot, dont forget to remove the cigarette lighter power wire and reattach it when you're done.

To go along with what leenjen said, if you have an auto trans, drop the shifter into 1 (and don't forget to set the parking brake!) and it will make it a lot easier. It is also a little tricky to get the panel up and over the hazard switch, but just wrestle with it a little and it'll work :).

peace

Mike
