I am attempting to replace the stereo on my new for me 92. There is a ford radio cassette installed (sort of) which does not appear to be the original system. How do I know if I have the premium wiring set up or not? I need to know which harness to buy but can't figure it out. There is one rectangular thingy and one square-ish thingy. Help. Yes I am a girl.

you should get the thingy that looks like the thingy that connects to all the wires on the behind the sterio in there right now.

The premium stereo plug is black and basically square on the back of the driver's side of the radio/cassette. It has 8 rather thin wires that go into a round shielded gray covered cable that goes to the factory amp at the passenger side rear wheel well behind the panel.

The other plug is for power, antenna, memory, ground, etc.

The harness you need depends on whether you want to keep or bypass the factory amp, keep or bypass the factory speaker wiring and whether or not you plan on installing a new amp for say like a subwoofer.

Having just accomplished all of the above in one drawing or another to decide how to install my system, tell us what your plans are and then we can tell you what harness(es) to get.

If you have these two wires, then it has the standard radio harness.... if you only have 1,with a square connector as the second plug, which it sounds like you do, then you have premium sound....

1992 Explorer Audio Systems

Looking at the photos from "Crankcase" -
the gray connector on the right is the radio "Power" connector - the same connector is used in "standard" and "Premium" systems (though the pinouts are different).

The black connector on the left is the "Speaker" connector. The one shown is for "Standard" sound systems ONLY, the Premium Sound System or Ford/JBL system does not use this connector.

The Premium Sound System and Ford/JBL System use the small "squarish" shielded connector (with 8 pins) attached to a gray shielded cable.

The cassette radio in the factory "Standard" system has a base part number of -19B132-; the part number for the Premium Cassette radio, used with Premium Sound, or Ford/JBL, would have a base part number of -19B165-.

The Ford Premium Sound System will have one (4 channel) amp in the RR qtr trim area; the Ford/JBL System will have TWO amps (one 4 channel, one SW) mounted to the SW enclosure in the RR qtr trim.

If you have an Explorer with the shielded connector, and a -19B132- radio, somebody has changed it - would be really hard to tell what or how they did it without pulling out all of the wiring.

Hope that helps you sort out what you've got.

Regards,

I think the Stickie at the top of the message board said something like if you have a toggle volume switch, it's usually premium, and if it's a knob, then it's the non-premium.

I think most of the trucks came with "premium sound", unless you have the lowest version of explorer, which won't have roof racks, or rear wiper.

You could do it the ghetto way, and take a flash light and peak through the hole where the passenger shoulder's seat belt comes from, it should be just behind it...
