When I try to engage the 4X4 option on my '92 Sport, I can hear a low "click"
from the rear on the driver's side but nether the 4X4 light or the actual 4X4 mechanism will activate. Last week, if I played with driving forward and backwards often enough (while pressing the 4X4 button on the dash) I would occasionally activate the 4X4.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Sounds like the shift motor isn't turning. Seems to be a fairly common problem. you might try tapping the shift motor to see if it loosens it up. Or you might try cleaning the shift motor as described elsewhere here.

The top thread in the "stickies" in this forum has a thread all about this problem... 4X4 shift motor rebuild.

You can also try this:

Or this one...Which shows you step by step how to rebuild the shift motor:

Good luck...I will be trying all this myself this spring/summer too...

Thank you.

But what is a "stickies"?

Stickies are threads that don't change position and appear @ the beginning of each forum so they can be found easily. They contain information on common problems and should always be your starting point when researching a problem.

As an example you should take a peek at the shift motor rebuild thread as that is your 4x4 problem.
