If anyone has any ideas it would be really helpful. I need the truck to get to work tomorrow. The truck started for a second then stalled this morning. I tried to restard it and got nothing. I cranked it over a bunch of times and got nothing. The intake smelled like gas. I unplugged the battery to reset the computer but it didn't work. Does anyone have any ideas. I don't want to spend money that I don't have to (meaning I don't want to replace things that don't need to be replaced chasing this problem) Thanks in advance.

No ideas????? I would reeally appreciate it.

Sounds like you may have it flooded. You need to check and see if your getting fire to the plugs, then we might go from there.

Thanks for the reply. It is flooded but why would it get flooded. The only thing I can think of is no spark, which I don't think is the case. Do you know of anything else?

You should check for spark, if its sparking then you can go from there, but if its not then it could be the coil pack, or the computer. Until you know, its too hard to tell.

someone told me it could be the temp sensor or the maf sensor. I don't see why but did you ever hear of something like this?

I doubt that would be causing your no start problem. You need to check for spark, remove a spark plug or if you have an extra put it on one of your plug wires and see if your getting fire.(You probably know, but just in case put the bottom end of your plug against
a good ground when you check it.)

I'll check it out. This is my first vehicle w/o a distributor/coil. What if I'm not getting spark?

If your not getting spark you might check your Power Distribution Box. It's the big fuse block under the hood.Start by checking the fuses in there. If they're OK it might be the coilpack or the ignition control module, but that's just a guess...

Did you have any trouble with it before today? Was it missing, cutting out,or check engine light on?

Keep us posted, I've got the same thing happening. Definitely check for spark as outlined above.

Just got finished putting 5 of six spark plugs in. I actually was going to check if I was getting spark by pulling the plug out but when I pulled the first plug out it was nasty and I could tell that the gap was way to big. I knew that if plugs stay in the motor too long the gap opens, so I figured these were the original plugs (Motorcraft)(the truck has 82k) After changing the five plugs that I could reach (I didn't have a jack to do the last one) the truck started right up. I let it warm up to normal operating temp and took it for a spin. After a while the check engine light came on but the truck was running perfectly. I unplugged the battery to reset the ecu but the light eventually came on again. Tomorrow I will get the code out of the computer and let you know what else is going on.

To add, I never had a problem before except for one time when I didn't let the truck warm up and it stalled when I was getting into first (it's a stick). When I tried to restart it took about five tries for it to start, but nothing else suspicious ever happened. Good idle, no missing, no other problems.

Glad to hear it's running. It's pretty common for the platinum plugs to keep going till they're wore down with a pretty wide gap.If you have an extension with a swivel on the end you can get that rear right plug out by cutting the wheels to the left and go in through the fender well behind the wheel without jacking it up.

While your at it if it hasn't been done lately it would be a good time to clean the MAF,TPS,and IAC valve, it can make a world of difference.

JUST CLEANED THE MAF NOT TOO LONG AGO BUT PLAN ON DOING THE OTHERS SHORTLY. I ALSO HAVE A 79 NOTCH MUSTANG
( http://www.geocities.com/maxim80801/red79notch.jpg ) THAT GETS MOST OF THE ATTENTION BUT I GUESS NOW IT'S TIME TO PAY A LITTLE MORE ATTENTION TO THE EXPLORER.

WOULD YOU USE CARB CLEANER FOR TPS,and IAC valve TOO?

DO YOU GUYS RECOMMEND ANY PERTICULAR BRAND OF PLUG WIRES? IF SO HOW MUCH DO THEY GO FOR?

P.S. Thank you for all of the friendly help! I haven't been on the site too long but I def. think it's one of the most helpful sites I've ever been on!

I use carb cleaner to clean mine, but you might use the search to see what everyone else uses to be on the safe side.

As for wires you can't really go wrong with Motorcraft, but as for the budget or preference people use different brands.

Yea, this is a good sight, and very helpful.I see we joined about the same time
but I had been lurking round on here for quite awhile before I joined.I could find most of what I needed to know by looking through the threads but guilt caught up with me so I joined and kicked in my money for Elite, best money ever spent :)

cool thanks for all the help!

Brake cleaner is better than carb cleaner, and for the MAF electrical contact cleaner is best of all.
