My 92 XLT 4WD runs great. Nothing wrong.
It just eats up gas like no tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to improve the gas mileage? Help anyone!

welcome to my nightmare  :( im gettin about 10mpg...how about you?

I have also posted a thread about this problem. I figured out that someone pulled my left hand O2 sensor out of it's harrness. It was probably the guy that I out bid for it at the auction. It instantly went from 8 to 12 MPG, but 12 still sucks. I shift at 2500 rpms and I go easy on the gas, I think I will try to fix my mass airflow sensor

:bounce::shoot:

Give it a tune up and maybe a KKM I get over 20 with my 92 sport, within last year i have changed fpr,O2sensor,tps,and plugs and wires, and added a KKM:D

88vert,
I'm in a similiar situation with my '92. Would it be possible to post pictures of what you've done so I can see what the end product is supposed to looks like?

Thanks

I am soory i dont have pics of the motor:( What do you have for miles?Does your ex use any oil? What have you done so far to help?:D

My Ex has 185,000 miles and I've noticed a decrease in acceleration power and gas mileage. I had my CEL codes read at AutoZone and they came back with O2 sensor going out, air flow code, and injector pulse was too long during a cycle. I cleaned my MAF the other weekend. I printed most of the posts on this board that told how to go about cleaning it and it went smoothly. I noticed that the screen on the MAF where it attaches to the air box was dirty, like soot. So I wiped it off with a clean towel.

My next task is to replace the O2 sensor, but I haven't decided if I'll try that myself or have the garage do it. I'm a long ways from being a mechanic.

I've heard and read a lot about the KKM air filters and was hoping I could see some pictures of one in a '92. Someone had a picture of one they installed on a '96, but the configuration looks a lot different than in a '92.

My Ex doesn't use any oil and just last weekend I changed the oil and put a can of "restore" in with it. I still use Fram oil filters even though I've read the infamous oil filter report. Primarily because I have a couple of new Fram filters I haven't used. Once there gone I might switch to another brand.

Any infor you could send my way would be great.

Thanks

Are your tires stock size? If they're bigger you may be getting better mileage than you think. Also, try increasing tire pressure a bit. I'm running 31x10.5 AT/KO's, and upped mine to 39 #'s. I gained a full 2 mpg! Now I wouldn't recommend running 39# on 235/75's, but may be somewhere up towards 34. You may sacrifice ride quality, and a bit more abuse on your suspension, but you'd gain the mileage. Good luck,

They're Uniroyal 235/75's. Thanks for the idea.

1) Clean your MAF (Pictoral How-To coming shortly).
2) Pull all your plugs and ensure the gap is between 0.050 - 0.054 (causes mine to miss).
3) Apply dielectric grease liberally to the both ends of your plug wires.
4) Ensure that your tires are inflated to spec ... OK to go over a few PSI, never go under on surface streets (heat buildup do to underinflation is the #1 cause of blowouts).
5) Inspect your air filter, replace/clean it if required.
6) Run some good quality fuel injector cleaner through the system.

As for the O2's ... you can change them yourself in less than an hour with a box wrench (forget the size) and no other tools ;)

Thanks for the list fastcougar. I've done #'s 1, 2, 5, & 6. I'll check the tire pressure and grease the plug wires too. There's a post going about changing the O2 sensors that I've been watching and I've got both the Haynes and the other manual, so maybe I'll give it a try.

I see that you have a K&N filter. Did you notice any improvements in acceleration or gas mileage when you installed it? I haven't done enought research between the KKN and the K&N to know which is better and cost efficient.

Thanks

You should only have one o2 sensor, check your fuel pressure regulator too:D

It was the FPR that ate up gas on mine and all I got was a O2 sen.s code. Its easy to change and worth a look. Good luck.

Toad
Rookie mechanic here. What is FPR and where is it located? How do I check it also.

Thanks

Fuel pressure regulator and it is located on the passenger side fuel rail check the vacume line for gas

When my fuel pressure regulator went out it took out my o2 sensor too,if there is gas in the vacume line it means the regulator is shot, and if you let it go to long it will take out your o2 sensor too:(

The gas is not always in the vacuum line, sometimes ,like mine, its clear and the regulator is still shot. Like the guys said it will cook the O2 sen.s . Check for gas in oil etc. Check this out-

Good luck

I'll check the FPR. Thanks for the link. Another question. I've seen pictures of MAF's and they all seem to be made of black material, plastic I'm assuming. My MAF is more like cast or die material, silver in color. The only reason I'm asking is because I haven't heard anyone mention anything about the screen that is in the MAF where it connect to the airbox. Is this standard??

Mine has the screen and cast MAF . Ive cleaned it with electrical parts cleaner before, couldnt hurt.

Our Amsoil filters for the explorer (depending on year and engine) are about $22.00 and filter dust much better than KN. Where flow is the same. I have durango customers that say they get 15 more miles per tank. Also our gear and synthetic ATF lower temps up to 50 degrees. More power transfer in the torqconverter. For gearboxes the Series 2000 is tested for 5% increase in MPG.
