I have a 92 XLT and the 4x4 stopped working. I checked the switch and it is getting power to and from it but I cannot tell if it is getting power to the box in the rear above the tire on the drivers side. I also do not know what to check on the shift motor under the X to test for voltage to see if it that motor. It worked fine one day, put new 31" tires on it, it worked for a day and then quit. I think that whatever broke was not because of the tires due to the fact that quite a few poeple (almost all) on here have 31" or larger tires.

Thanks for the help!

my X

Had the same prob. and it was the electric motor.
I removed the motor, opened it up and cleaned the contacts, and just put it back.
Thats all it needed.

1: remove the electric motor
2:open up the motor
3: becarful of the small springs (they pop out)
4: clean the contacts with a pencel eracer
5: put all back together
there's a link with pictures some place in the site

try having someone sit in your truck with motor running, put in neutral , foot on break, have them push on the 4x4 button while you lay underneith and tap on the motor, not really hard just enough to free up any debris that may be holding up the motor, i did this and worked for a while till i could take it apart. good luck, do a search there are an ass load of threads on this. mike

Well you also ned to check and make sure the rear shift computer is getting signal.

Go back to left rear compartment and disconnect the two plugs on the left of the shift computer. Turn the key to the on position then go to the back and push the white button on the botom of the shift computer. If the red light stays lit then you have a problem with the shift computer. If it flashes then problem is at t-case probably motor.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a try in the next few days.
