My 1992 XLT is going through about a quart of oil every 2,000 miles. This might not be that bad but seems like a lot to me. I've crawled all over and under the engine and can't find a leak anywhere and its not smoking at all. A friend of mine looked at a 92 and was told they all use a lot of oil. Has anyone else heard of this. If so what can be done to fix it.

Did you switch your brand of oil. I for one used Quaker State oils for a while and noticed that I would have to add at least a quart between oil changes. When I switched back to Castrol there was no oil consumption. I guess my car likes the taste of Quaker State too much!

I too run Castrol Syntec 5W-50 in my 94 Explorer and it consumes no oil and never has. I change the oil every 2500 miles and have used synthetic since the truck had 500 miles on it--it currently has 28,500 miles on it. Does yours have any seepage from the valve covers or from the rear main seal?

Actually, I've got the exact same problem. My 92 XLT is drinking oil as well. I haven't been able to find any leaks, and there's no smoke coming from mine either. I've tried a couple of different kinds of oil with no improvement.

If you find out what's going on with yours, be sure to post it so I can see if it helps me out.

Thanks

I had the Same problem with My 1992 Navajo There is a fix to this All you need to do is retorque the lower Intake Manifold bolts. There are eight of them... I Was not sure this would work either butI tryed it
any way. One year has gone buy and myNavjao has not use one drop of oil... The bolt over the #5 cylinder was so loose that I could have taken it out buy hand. You will have to take the upper intake manifold off to thighten the bolts...

My 94 also had the same problem. I found out from a friend who works at the service department at Ford that the 4.0 engines have a bad problem of "blowing" the gaskets where the intake manifold bolts to the block. I replaced mine and it fixed the problem. It is a very easy job and only takes a few hours.
Hope this helps.
