93 4x4 advice

new to the site with a question about 4x4 for a 93 explorer. I am having trouble with my 4 wheel drive working at all. I would like to modify the suspension, but with no four wheel drive what's the point. I have taken apart the motor that engages the transmission into 4 wheel drive and there is no problem there. What can i do in determinine what is wrong so I can fix it and get ready for the trails.
