No I haven't done it yet but I figure since I can't lift it and don't have lowrange I'm going to turn this into a street fighter... I have the 5.0 and want to put a 5.0 Cobra engine under the hood... Now the question is will the new engine bolt up to my tranny since they are both 302's??? If so then I'll figure out the wiring to make the ECU work in the explorer for the fuel management and what not... I would go with just the s/c from Explorer Express but I want more.... I'll look into a sc'ed or turbo'ed Cobra engine... If anyone knows about this or has looked into it PLEASE speak up...

TIA,

Heath

Now where talking

Yes it should 99% sure. I have a mustang 91 5.0 and did a AOD>T5 swap. With the research that I have done there should be know prob.

Look for the bearing retainer length if its a manual they changed in the mid 90s. if it is to long it will not allow the tranny to bolt up correctly! also you may need I application fly wheel or flex plate for that year of block.

Good luck and keep us informed. I have be thinking of a 5.4 for mine. They make superchargers for them and a ton of other parts!

Tranny...

Well my X is an auto and I'd like to keep it that way... I would prefer to us the 98 Cobra engine if I can find one... Also do you know if the ECU is plug and play or will I need to do some rewiring???

ah maybe

I would think that a 4.6 DOHC would be a tight fit. Do some measureing. ECU I don't know! i would be able to help more if it where a 5.0.

Sorry!

Best guess i would think it is diff.

D.S.S sells 4.6 blocks Short and long. you can find there ads in any Mustang mag... 5.0 and super fords or muscule mustangs and fast fords.

Crap...

I forgot that from 96-98 it was the 4.6 wasn't it... So I need to find a 93-95 right... I'm okay with that... Can you give me an idea on the hp ratings on that engine??? And Any advice that you think I'll need... Will I need just the block??? Or all of the "perrifials" with it too???

Why not just beef up the motor in your truck?? Pur Pony has the explorer 5.0 in his truck and he has 285 rwhp. He has some major power in his truck. The money you are going to shell out for the conversion, you should just put into the motor you have now. You can do some major work to it since it is already a mustang engine.

Block

The block itself is the same between the std. 5.0 and cobra. It maybe easier to find/use a std. 5.0 and put a good set of heads and intake cam in/on it. That would be all you need. You could use the stock block for this.

Stock 210-245 hp 250-300 ft lbs

My motor is stock (just tuning) and i run a mid 13. (mustang)
Aprox. 250 Hp

Mod I have a friend that is pushing 1500 Hp in a mustang running high 7s.

But I also have a friend that has the worlds quickest eclipse with 650 hp running low 9s.

Old saying is How fast you want to go depends on your back pocket. Speed costs money!

Well I'm not looking to run the quarter in 10 flat... But it would be nice to be able to kill all of the ricers on the street and even hang with the GT's in the straights...

I want to keep the AWD system that is in the truck too...

So anymore reccomendations???

It's nearly impossible to get a 4.6 under the hood. In one of the engine swap threads...two of the 4.6's dimentions are larger than a Ford 460...which is pretty dang big....302 is the easiest swap of em all, which isnt easy, and and over all, it tends to be easier to build a big 302 over a 4.6.
