i need some good quick advice here.... a guy i know has a 93 ranger 4.0motor without the harness and i need to know if i could put it into my 91 X as a straight swap???...Mine also is a 4x4, does it matter at all if his was 4x2??? is there anything I should look for going from a ranger to an X???

the only advice i had gotten before was to make sure i got a 91-94 4.0 motor as there was something to do about they wire up different...

thanks for all the help...

anbody??? i only ask this as i am not sure, if for any reason a ranger motor is different from the X, as i think they wouldn't be...

ok, i just found out the motor came out of a 93 ranger manual tranny and it has all the wiring... it is going into a 91 X w/auto tranny...should there be any problems of just plugging it in or will some wire swappage need to be done??? i have read several threads but can't find any problems with the quick swap so far, anybody???

I did this. You should have no probs. You will even be able to use some of your wires.

burns...what im thinking is, just unplug my x's motor, pull it, drop in the ranger motor and plug it in...is it really that simple??? even with different trannys???

Yes. That is what i did. Even if the motor is from a 5speed truck or auto. Also does not matter if it is 4x4 or 4x2. I pulled my motor out of a 94 ranger 5speed truck and put it in my 91 auto explorer.

I unpluged every wire on the new motor and plugged it up with what was in my explorer.

that is to cool, lmao...thanks so much for making my day...:salute:

LOL. Its was one of the best things i ever did to my explorer. I had 319,000 miles when i did the swap.

Its a pretty easy swap. Here is a tip for you. Dont try to pull the exhaust manafolds off if you dont have to. I broke two bolts off in the newer motor and had to drill and tap them out. Just a warning for you.

thanks for the tip...now that leads to another question...the X has headers on it...should i keep them??? i was told it got killer gas milage before he seized it and was wondering if headers are a bad thing on a 4.0???

Ah well then swap the headers on to the newer motor. I will prob get better mileage with the new motor. Mine did. I would keep the headers.

better mpg's, more power, gruuuunt...lol thanks burns...
now i'm sketching....
if i didn't have to work this week i would work day and night to get this ready for pismo...first, i can't get it home till next weekend though...but it will be running for say a trial run in big bear in july??? just fishing that is, lol

its official for the motor...i just got the used one delivered and it did came with the harness and a computer...we'll keep this thread updated as for the motor swap but i have faith in burns' info...:salute:
