93 TEMPERATURE "UN-STEADINESS"

Hey All,

I Have A 93 Limited 4x4 W/ Ac. I've Had If For About 2 Years Now.
It Has 173,000 Miles On It. Ever Since I Bought The Truck I Noticed The Temp Gauge Goes From Low Normal To Mid, Just Above Half On The Gauge. Any Causes Known For This?????? I've Replaced The Water Pump, Lower Hose, And The Thermostat. The Coolant Has Been Replaced. I Have A New Radiator, Getting Ready To Replace. Do You Think This Will Help With The Temp Gauge Thing? I'v Also Noticed A Slow Leak Towards The Bottom Of The Radiator; Right In The Area Of The Lower Hose. Could This Leak Be A Product Of The Temp Going Back And Forth???
At Least It Doesn't Overheat All The Way !!! I Just Want To Feel Secure If I Take It On A Long Road Trip.

coolant temp sensor. It's a little thing by the ts housing.

If you've got a leak, then theres your answer. Fix the leak and I bet the problem goes away.

Fix all leaks.

Make sure that you installed the thermostat correctly so that air purge check valve is positioned correctly. Evn with purge check valve oriented correctly, it can be sommewhat time consuming getting all of the air out of the system but air will definitely cause fluctuations.

Buy a Ford OEM thermostat (made in Germany where your engine was built) becuase not even the pricy thermostats are as good (and dependable and fast compensating) as an original equipment thermostat.

Burping air out is an art form.... Read your shop manual and have fun squeezing your upper hose a lot.

Replace the sending unit. There are two.. one for the engine control system and the other for the gauge.

sounds like the sensor but you could have a poor t/s I knoe alot of people put new ones in and never fixed there problem until the oem is installed. could be air in the system as well.

If you radiator cap is the original, it could be that as well. With time, the spring weakens and the cap doesn't hold pressure properly.
