I purchased a 94 Explorer 4x4 for the grandson and the previous owner stated that the tranny was having problems shifting. After driving the vehicle, I did not think there was going to be a big issue as the tranny was strong, no slipping or obvious noises. It would shift from first to second only after reaching about 3500 rpm and letting up on the throttle. I could work the vehicle this way for a few months. It started to work normally for a few months after that, then stuck in first gear. Now it will not shift at all. Manually or other wise. Would anyone have an idea as to what the problem maybe? I have read several postings and it sounds like others have some what of a similar issue. I am sure this question has been asked several times already, but I am looking for an answer specific to this problem. Thanks.

So, I decided to move forward since I didn't get a response from my first posting question as to what my tranny problem may be. I started the repair process with replacing the vacuum modular. Fairly easy, but the only thing this accomplished was spending more money replacing the exhaust system since the grandson did not listen when I told him to spray the nuts with liquid wrench penetrating oil. He broke the nuts off then took the saws-all to the rest of the system. Damn kid. ;) The new modular does look good though.

Im not a big transmission expert nor do i care for automatics but you could try adjusting the cable that runs from the throttle body to the trans. There is a button shaped like a half moon pointed up mounted on the firewall on the driver side in line with it. It lets you unlock the adjustment and shorten or lengthen it. It has to do with the shift points. Its a longshot but maybe that gives you an opportunity to discover the problem. GL

4 days wasn't bad wait time for no response. Some folks know and some don't. you could have gotten 100 replies saying good luck the auto trans is junk, even after you rebuild it.

However that wouldn't help you, I don't know anything about the A4LD auto trans other than stay away from it. Personally I own a 5 speed Explorer.

I would search under A4LD, and see what comes up. You may find what your looking for.
