'94 XLT
Hi All,
I'm new to the list, but thought I'd share some stuff I found out about my 94 XLT after owning it 3 yrs and driving it about 50k.
Had overheating probs and pinging like a lot of other folks. There was not one single solution but a combo of things that finally put my ex back in good shape.
Flushed coolant - no change
Changed t-stat - no change
Changed bad O2 sensor - a little better
Found leaky vacuum liines - a little better
Cleaned MAS - ran better but same overheat
De-carbonized - no change
Checked EGR - OK
A sharp mechanic finally tested exhaust pressure found it high. He suspected plugged cat converter but found semi-plugged muffler/ Changed muffler - improvement but still occasioanl o'heating
I finally found slight leak from trans coolant hose spraying trans fluid on lower part of radiator causing sludge buildup and reducing cooling capacity. Fixed trans fluid hoses and cleaned exterior of radiator...no more overheating in Baja Mexico (over 100degrees)

Hope this might help somebody..it drove me crazy for almost a year and cost me a lot of $$$ on mechs that couldn't fix prob. I did a lot of the work myself , so I was one of the guys that couldn't fix the problem.

Just wanted to point out that some problems are an accumulation of a couple of things....

Happy Exploring!

Paul

Welcome to the site. Thanks for posting that. Most peoples 1st post are to say that they have a problem.... Not to help out felow explorer owners... In my book that is cool, and you will become an explorer addict like many of us here..... :) P.S. being an addict to a truck isnt a bad thing ;)

:bounce: Awesome!!! :bounce:

Too cool dude, thanks for the info, you just made my
day :D

...and the best thing to do to get rid of a pinging engine is to replace your intake manifold gasket. It gets rid of several problems at once.
