94' a/c is acting weird

Today I went to use my A/C for the first time since last summer and got nothing but hot air. I fiddled with the switches on the dash and got cold air to come out but only in defroster mode. Does any body have any ideas on whats wrong? I'm looking for a fix so that i don't have to go some screw me over garage to get it fixed.

did you push the button in,can you hear the compressor

When I put on the defroster the compressor kicks in but in any other setting including MAX AC it doesn't

does it need a recharge?Could have a leak too.Thats odd about your compressor.

I agree with 88vert that it is odd about your compressor. If it kicks in during defrost and blows cold, but not in any other setting, I would have to think there is a problem with your switch, not your A/C system. If you have cold air, the refrigeration cycle is working correctly, your switch is just not telling it to happen when it should.
