Hey, Just a random question, i'm in the market for an Explorer, I found a great deal on one just down the road, but when I test drove it, it took pretty long time to accelerate up to 45, is that just because its a V-6 and a pretty big truck with not much torque? or could it be deeper? It just had the tranny rebuilt... so i'm just wondering...
Thanks

What were you driving before? The 4.0 OHV is slow, no doubt. You can't really know because you haven't driven THAT Explorer before to tell if there is a difference in performance.

Yeah, Good point, Before I was driving a 96 Ecipse...

Go to some car lot that has one like it (engine trans) and drive it the same way. Then YOU have a comparison.

My explorer used to have really good acceleration when i was living in maine..i have a V-6 and now that im out here it takes me like 2 hours to reach 65. People say here its because of the high altitude..dont know if thats what it is or that my explorer is going to die soon.

i have a 94 sport manual and when i get on the freeway i is slow to accelerate but when it gets up to speed it really goes

At some point in time, you might talk to Doug at Bamma chips. He can probably make a computer tune for your altitude and restore your power and performance. He is a forum sponsor and a heck of a nice guy to talk to/deal with.

Note: Fix the brakes first though. :D

lol u think the brakes should be first? i think speed is more important lol! how do i get in touch with him? i just joined these forums yesterday lol

late on this post

i have a 1994 xlt with 200k + miles and i have a kkm intake and flowmasters(super 40 series) and bosch plat. on it! and it gets up and goes! i get up to 75 80mph in about 5 to 6 seconds which is really good for my xlt! i am running undersized tires right now but even with these i will still burn'em! dont under estimate the 4.0 lots of potential! just gotta put the money into it!

75-80 mph in 5 or 6 seconds? Stop kidding yourself. Seriously....

0-60 in one.... weekend  , the speed isnt really that bad but after coming from an eclipse yeah it is going to feel like your not moving. there are things that can be done to improve the acelleration if you decide to buy it. good luck with it if you decide to buy it.

I'm assuming he meant from a starting speed of 50mph not zero...

its a old truck... being pushed by a decent engine and a lousy transmission.

I have a 91 with 172k... and to be honest, it really isnt that big of a dog, it doesnt hurt to have the 3.73 though (I guess alot of people have 3.27 or lower)... It gets me where I need to go, and if I have to get there in a hurry, it can do it.

It is what it is, I drove my friend's V8 AWD Jeep and yeah, you definately notice the difference, but your also talking about a whole different animal.

That's definitely a joke...but how much undersized tires? If you're running 25's your spedometer will say 80 when you're doing 50-60 :D

And...I have the intake and exhaust too. It runs great and will haul when its like 60 degrees or cooler. But, on hot summer days with the ac running a pinto would dust me.

It is a truck, its not meant to be a sports car. my 5 speed feels pretty fast to me when i drive it that way, but after driving a real sports car, and getting back in my ex it seems extremely slow.
