94 explorer,, rough idle cold,????

quick update,, today i pulled the battery out and, cleaned all grounding points under the hood i could find,, sanded them bare metal clean, also cleaned the wire ring terminals aswell,, i also did this to both grounds behind the kick panels,, my hood ground strap was basicly gone so i made a new one out of some 10 guage stereo wire with eyelets at the ends and self tappered it,, sanded and cleaned the ring terminals on all the positive wires going to the starter solenoid ,, and just switched the computer to the one from the explorer in the junk yard i got for 10 bux , recon'd the battery

it started good,, power is good,, idle is good ,,so far,, and NOW MY CRUISE CONTROL WORKS??? for the first time ever ??:D drove it 30 some miles,, shut it off for a half hour,, it started up just fine,,, however the real test will be tomorrow at 5:45 am when i fire it up to head to work,, we'll see how she does,,, and hopefully it will run good,, and continue to run good for more than just a week,,

i will keep you updated sir,, and thank you very much again for all the help and advise ,, :chug:

How'd she do this morning? :)

dude, i love the ostrich? it looks like it's staring right at me,,,,,, anyways,, this morning i hopped out on the front porch anxious as to what she was gonna do,, so i hit the remote start button:D,,,than it fired up !! it idle'd a lil high at first than gradually came down just like its supposed to,,,, at first it idled a lil too high for my taste,,1200-1300 rpm range,,,,, but seriously,,I'LL
TAKE IT ,,, over it idleing like a drag car with a huge cam in it,,, but only time will tell ,,,,

like i said before,, it likes to run fine for a while ,, than start acting funny again,,, but the cruise control all of a sudden working is boggleing me,,

i wish that i would have taken a more "systematic" approach to figuring out exactly what made the bigger difference,,, was it cleaning up all the grounds and positive leads that made it work better?? or was it the computer switch that made the difference??? but i figured "well i already have the kick panel off,, i might aswell throw this computer in and see what happens",,,

and mabey it idleing a lil too high at first is because the computer is still learning??? i suppose,,,, but like i said,,, well see how she goes, for a lil while longer,,, because, if it starts doing it again,, than the next solution will be CRAIGSLIST,,,

but as of now she runs good,,idle's better,, power is better, and the cruise control works?? im a happy camper,,

i seriously love these trucks,, this is my 4th one, this is the one that i wanted to keep for a while,, hopefully everything will remain cool,,, so we'll see,,

i posted a new update, thank you very much again for all the information,,

Excellent!

Very happy to hear everything is back in working order... as far as the 1200-1300 idle, on a cold start especially that's perfectly normal... and the idle went down over time just like normal too. Good to hear!

I love this ostrich head, I don't know why... it's just.. amusing to me lol.

As said above the Idle is right were it is normal

TPS sensor adjustment

When that Clown as you call him adjusted your TPS sensor by reaming the mounting holes a bit that is one of the tricks I also do and learned about here. Even new they can be out of spec just as a new spark plug can also be dead and will not fire. Not often but it dose happen. Also they are only set for an average and by dialing them in some times they can be made to work a bit better and or correct a minor problem. now this is not saying he is a good wrench or not only that on that part what he did was most likely not a bad thing by looks alone.

Parts replacement as trouble shooting

I have also learned the hard way over the years the worst way to fix an auto is to just throw parts at it. Back in the day before computer controlled that was okay and parts were cheap but to day it’s not good and parts are not cheap.

FYI about Code readings

reading a code many times will not tell you exactly what’s wrong it will only tell you what area is being effected you then have to trouble shoot that areas whole system to find the fault and some times a code from one area can be also thrown by a fault in a related and monitored area so it is always best to systematically trouble shoot before a single part is changed.

Trouble shooting

Having a code reader, a Chilton’s or other repair manual, and the tools to do basic trouble shooting including a good multi meter are a must for any home mechanic now days. I have found even with all of them this Sight is also a must on my list before a part is changed or bought. Many here have been there done that or have the knowledge or information to normally help out were I may have over looked some thing in my own trouble shooting.

Glad it’s all working for you now. Is it not a wonder how a simple little ground can affect so many things now with all the electronics and computers our autos run on.

So what exatcly did you do bro to check and make your idle right again im having this same issue:(
