Problems just started about a month ago. Started getting smell our of vents when driving with the AC on. Smell is between sweet and gasoline smell. It gets pretty strong in the cab.
Second problem is that the speedometer has a slight pulse when you are driving. The volt meter moves the same.
I am trying to find out if the Speedometer is cable operated or if it is electric. Has anybody else had these symptoms?
I have recently cleaned the DPFE sensor and replaced the EGR valve. Also, I found a charcoal canister out of a wrecked Explorer and replaced mine since the bottom was rotted out.

Any help with this would be great. Please e-mail me at d_k_rhoades@yahoo.com.
Thanks

on my '91, I've noticed that the voltmeter drops when I've got the steering wheel all the way to the stops(and am trying to turn it a little bit more)

Has the smell cleared out since you replaced the canister?

Have your battery load checked. Mine was on the verge of dieing and acting much the same as yours.

The smell is still there. I am not sure if I have a leak in the AC and it comes back thru the vents or what.
I have not checked the Battery. I can take it to one of the local shops for that.
Does anybody know if the Spedo is run by cable or electric?
The CEL is not on so I don't know what direction to take.

Sweet smell in the vents can be a telltale sign of coolant leakage in there. I'd check the heater core, and the entire cooling system for leaks.

Well the good news it, it is not coolant. I have had that in another vehicle and we know that smell too well.
Checking on the Valve that opens to let the gas fumes out of the canister and back into the engine. I read a post that said to check or replace that. Yes big_hoovie The smell is still there since the canister repalcement (out of a wrecking yard).

The charcoal canister? Could be. Another thing to consider is mold inside the a/c ducts causing the smell. Of course mold won't smell like gas...

my speedo bounces like a kid on a trampoline from about 55 on up. My voltmeter always points northwest,,, vents smell like stale cigarettes
