I've been pawing through posts regarding cold air intakes and always see mention about the TB and also about how your intake is only as good as the smallest passage. Getting the 5.0 Maf housing is easy enough, but what about the TB? I read one person asking a question about the TB for the 4.6L F-150s being a direct fit, but no one ever answered them. Is that true? Or what other cheap alternative is there to get a wider TB opening for a first gen Ex? Also, would it have any negative effects on the idle, or cruise control?

Awesome, but pretty far out of my current price range. I need a cheaper solution.

x2^ and the 4.6tb will not fit the ohv 4.0

Not going to #### around with a dremel as my hands are unsteady. I will however read your post Speedracer, and out of curiousity, do you have pics posted somewhere of that white explorer? It looks gorgeous.

Yeah...they are all over the place....

But here are a couple of my favorites:

The Last one is the most recent, after I added a Sunroof, and the Mustang Hood Scoops...

I would totally love a sunroof, but I have a light rack on top and that cool looking sun visor. Has that hood increased your performance at all? I'm thinking about adding fender vents myself, and I'm crossed on white paint, or that hot looking metallic red the newer Nissan's have. Nice ex

Wow that mod with the dremel doesn't seem hard. I may have to do that one of these days. Hard to believe you gain power from taking out that tiny little piece, but hey you sound happy so it must work.

I've done the half-shaft mod, with a larger MAF housing, and I have noticed a slight difference. I think I will notice more of a difference once I do an intake spacer. I read somewhere on this site of someone using a modified fuel rail to do this.

Sucks about the transmission. I have to say I've been really lucky with mine. Ford's I've noticed (especially the cars) are pretty bad with transmissions. You either get a bad car, or you happen to luck out. I just actually changed my fluid and filter the other day. I hope for a long time of faithful service ahead. So many nice links coming out of this thread. I'll have to try em all.

more than luck.. a well built trans, with a good cooler should do well. i just got a new trans built for my '93, had them do all the upgrades.. well, a bunch of upgrades anyhow. im sure they could have done more. the old trans was in it when i got it 65k miles ago, and as far as i know the original (replaced it at 217,000 miles)

it is true that some front wheel drive ford cars from the '90s had horrible transmissions.. Taurus, contour, etc.

The Taurus totally blew nuts. And isn't the explorer rear real drive? I have to say the 4x4 really sucks. I've been stuck many a time, but the vehicle otherwise is extremely faithfully and an enjoyable drive. I wasn't aware there was a cooler for the transmission. Is that standard? If not, where do you install it and what would you recommend?

Yes, the explorer is rear wheel drive.

if you think the 4x4 sucks, then either you need a better set of tires, or you can't drive (or you're comparing it to something which has had lockers added) the first gen explorers are a solid platform for 4x4, with strong axles etc that don't break. a "sucky 4x4" breaks constantly. an inept 4x4 simply hasn't had the proper mods (tires lockers etc) to be competitive with what you're comparing it to.

my '93 doesn't get stuck easily and it's all stock (Except tires). hell, in mud it just about keeps up with my friends 1 ton blazer with front/rear lockers on 39's

oh, and you can get a transmission cooler from any auto parts store, summit racing also has them. they usually go in front of the radiator.
there are two stock arrangements, one with a heat exchanger in the radiator only, and this is not sufficient.. the other (tow package) had a small external cooler in front of the radiator for the trans. if you do not have the tow package cooler, then i'd highly recommend adding a trans cooler unless you like constantly changing transmissions.

Hey spd rcer 34 so how hard was it to make the intake spacer cause i have a extra fuel rail lying around??

It's pretty simple. Once you have a blank one in your hands, and you look at the pictures I posted in my thread....it's pretty clear what has to be cut off to make it work.
