My dad went to a mechanic this morning because of problems with his explorer tranny, the engine revs up to almost 4000 rpms before shifting into second gear or he has to let go off the gas pedal for it to engage.
We did some adjustment to it using BrooklynBay thread as a guide were he shows with pictures the steps to fix it and it kind of got better.
He took it to a shop to have it fine tuned and they say there's nothing wrong with the bands..the problem according to the shop mechanics are a couple of servos located on the right side of the tranny and to have it fix it would cost him about 500 bucks. I'm thinking of fixing it myself and wanted to know how difficult or what problems should I expect before I put my paws into it.

Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! Those servos are hard to get to, but possible. You have 2 ways of getting to them. You could go from underneath, and drop the catalytic converter, or you could remove the seats, and go through the access panel in the floor. A Rotunda servo cover compressor tool would make the job easier. You should also replace the modulator while you are in there. Replace the heat shield if it is rusted out. They make larger servos, and covers if you want to upgrade them to get a more positive shift.
