94 Ford Explorer mystery problem.

I have a 94 4x4 ford explorer EB. We have done alot of work to this car and its alot to list right now as in trial and error for this problem. we made 2 road trips in this vehicle. one to florida and another to new orleans. both trips leaving out of atlanta and 9 months apart. each time on the road,interstate, after driving for several hours at 70mph. the car would just kill. we would coast and get on the shoulder. let the car sit for 10 min and them it would start right up. i check under the hood and nothing appears to be wrong. i am starting to wonder if there is a type of sensor that shuts the car down due to engine heat. i have taken out the radiator, cleaned it, flushed it, etc. what could this be. someone please put in the right direction for the solution. thanks

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the stock 91-94 section. Clean the MAF sensor.

When it dies and won't restart, do you hear the fuel pump prime for a couple of seconds when you turn the key to the ON position? If not, then your problem is fuel delivery related. I would first replace the fuel pump relay. A relay can malfunction when it gets hot, and then be OK when it cools down. The FP relay is an easy and cheap repair.

Hey thanks guys, the MAF is was replaced 6 months ago and recently cleaned with maf cleaner. to answer the question about fuel flow. from the time the car dies then restarts. i was not paying attention to the fuel pumping sound just as you aree starting the car. the fuel pump was replaced 8 months ago, however not the FP relay. i am going to replace that today. if anyone can think of any other reason why this car would die only on long trips aftger being on the road for a few hours. please let me know. thanks

Do you see a check engine light after it stalls? If not, then the PCM relay might be bad.
