ok i replaced the plugs/plug wires/IAC cleaned the MAS/TB and its running great ideling but when you drive it and get your foot to around 3/4 pedal it just cuts out and looses RPMs and speed. if you let out of the gas the hit it again but dont go past 3/4 of the pedal you can do around 55 or so. but this is really unsafe. we cant pull out in traffic unless theres a huge gap because it does not have any power to get up to speed quikly like it used to. it was doing this really bad. so i took the TPS off and looked at it and put it back on and its doing it less but its still unsafe. im thinking it could be 02 senors,EGR,TPS,MAS or a fule pump...what could it be though???? it ran alot better before i did anything to it....it also has a really bad hesitaion..help please

if it was the MAF, then you car would act like it was running out of gas...
like it would pretend to stall then BOOM it has power gain...

infact your problem does sound like it could be MAF related.
Maybe when you cleaned it you accidently got some goob on it?

If it was the fuel pump, by now it wouldnt drive at all...

well if it ran better before you did anything to it i would go back and check everything you did and make sure its all fine before messing with new stuff.

yeah...im thinking im going to take the intake apart again and check the MAS to check and see if i screwed somthing up. it idels really smooth bit has a horrid hesitaion and no power 3/4-full pedal..

yeah that sounds very MAF related.

i thought i was running out of gas once and was meracously able to drive 4 miles to the gas station

when i got there i filled up, and my car was still acting like a fool..

so i was like WTF

and popped the hood and there it was. My MAF was hanging there with my KKM filter, and it meracously seperated from the tubing. i tightened down the clamp a lil better and from there it was good.

you could very well have a nasty vaccume leak

the thing that gets me is after the plug install is when it started. before it just had a slight mis-fire at idel(reason for plug/wire change) but it ran great. you could put it to the floor and it would go

did you gap your plugs to the correct setting? (believe its supposed to be .45)

yep..the book said 54 so i went with a middle ground at 48. the same as i did on my 96'

did you put the wires on the same way they came off?

the coil pack is interesting, it doesnt exactly translate to the same position on the motor.

yeah me and my dad did them after the fact. it was running so bad that the next day we replaced the wires. both the wires and plugs where done one at a time as not to mix them up. it does not miss anymore fom what i can tell after the wire change.

I would check the tps...not the maf. Could be co-incidence...stranger things have happened. Plus you may have done something to it when bumbling around under there...just a thought

Check your intake piping for cracks or holes (between airbox and TB) if there is a hole, the engine movement could open it up from the torque of the rpm jump and cause your power loss... has happened to me in several vehicles especially in the flexible corners (in the little valleys)

that was my initial thought. i figured that the throttle might actually be opening up more, causing it to sort of arch back the opposite way telling the computer something WACK. But that doesnt seem very likley unless it had received some abnormal abuse?. worth a shot though.

but his idle is fine...

thats why i think its the MAF... when my MAF fell off it would run just at low RPMs, then when id hit like 2200 the truck would hesitate, jump, and sound like death... almost like when it would run out of gas...

what I was thinking is that the points on the sensor in that position are worn out and not recieving the message to give it fuel. I had that happen to me on a Olds ninety eight

I'll put some money on the MAF. What Creager described is what mine was doing. My MAF connection has only one clip so it came loose- Zip tied it and hasn't bothered me since.

Good Luck

Have you tried pulling codes? It seems on these EEC-IV engines, pulling codes is often a good place to start. And, if you do get all pass codes, then you can work from there.

For how to: see tests at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html

I'm sure you did but did you disconnect the battery when you cleaned the MAF?

yeah i did disconnect the battery the first time i cleaned it. but last night i cleaned it again and now it has stoped cutting out. the hesitaion is less. but it still seems like its getting starved for fuel or missing or somthing..its really odd. im going to hook up the computer to it tonight and see what it will pull up. i will also disconnect the battery again. i forgot to when i cleaned it last night.

Just an Idea.. Cat converters? Could they be clogged? Sounds like it to me, but dunno.. find a way to un hook them as close to the manifolds as possible, start her up it will be loud. Drive around the block.. You will know for sure. YOu dont have to totally take them off..just crack them open enough to leak REAL BAD> and if that is the case.. you will know for sure..
Just an Idea.. new here.. and to X's, but I do have a degree in Automotive..
