I've got a 92 XLT with 120,000 miles and a 5 speed. The engine runs fine but it just doesn't seem to have any power. Even in first gear when it's floored it just doesn't seem to have any guts to it. It even has a new fuel pump, filter pressure regulator, and clutch. Please help me so I don't waste money at the dealer.

Could be lots of things, fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, MAF, IAC....Theres a couple of things you could check. Also if you do a search you should find a lot of information

BTW Welcome to the site!!

is the clutch slipping?

check the cat. they get old and cause you to lose power and cause overheating

You can punch out the cats and wake the motor up.I did it to my 94 and it made a nite and day difference. I dont know if you have the smog sniffer test or not if you do you may not pass after that unless you Replace them.Just unbolt them and take a BFH and prybar and start poking the guts out of them.It makes a little more throaty sound in the exhaust also.

I too support the cat converter punch-out. I had an 87 Ranger in high school and mine were clogged so bad it eventually took me about a mile stretch to get up to 55. I hollowed them out when i got home and WOW, it felt like a Lightning afterward :D !!!!! Unless you have to pass smog, you can do it, though it is illegal, but laws are made to be broken right? :D

I put in new O2 sensor today big difference in performance, went from a sluggish missing load of junk to a like new motor, very sporty zippy. No codes either...with them bad..

Hehehe i currently have my last cat punched out, since i have 2, i chose to punch out the last one. It makes a huge difference in performance and you get a neat sound in it.

Ive considerded punching out the cat but im afraid it is going to mess with my o2 sensor. Will it?

i wouldnt know on a 96, sorry i cant help there, i know mine goes fine still, even better then before :D, less engine problems too

Don't punch out the cat, if you want to replace it replace it, but first check for codes and make sure there's no other running problems that will ruin it. I'd start with replacing the O2 sensors if you haven't done so in 60k miles or more. Then you want a cheap oem cat you ask me I can get anything for next to nothing.

with 120k on the clock, the first thing I'd do is a compression check and leak down test. Just verify that the meat of your engine is still strong.

I'd then start doing tune up stuff. Change plugs, wires, cap, rotar. I'd check the fuel pressure to make sure it's alright. Then I'd just change the o2's since they usually last a mere 70k miles and at least check the cats out.

I guess im close to needing new o2 sensors, at 135k km, so thats about 65k miles?
