'94 Limited
Just picked up this dandy explorer limited and it's nice. Good truck indeed..... last suv was a cherokee sport and this is MUCH better. Got a good deal on it and now I must make the good deal a good truck..... Here's why it was cheap:
Nasty ratchet coming from the front hubs (?) under 4x4 load and difficulty coming out of lock on one side. Vehicle has been a 'spare' and used very little... has 91k miles and last owner for past 4 years told me he hasn't used the 4x4 in over a year (translates to "never" in my book.) So maybe they are just gummed up?? I'd ask if I should just convert to manuals but I get the sneaking suspicion of the groups unanimous vote ;). So somebody tell me WHY I need to go manual, please. Thanks. NOW, the other tiny problem is this: Something <wince> Electrical. I noticed a flicker in the radio one day (just once... off/on) and a somewhat iffy display in the overhead when in reverse with the headlights on..... (thinking amp draw and ground here...) Then about 2 days later, The blower motor and radio refuse to work. I tracked it to kingdom come and nada. Finally found an offending relay in the power distribution box. Replaced it and the blower came back to life. Radio still dead. I chaulked it up to power spike and went on. So I set about finding a new radio..... THEN today..... I get in and suddenly the signal lights don't work, the overhead console is out and the blower is gone again!! Not the relay this time, either. While checking fuses for the millionth time I get back in and go to turn on the key... the clock on the radio is on... ?? Dead as soon as I try the power button though. NOW, the guy I got it from has a 'plug in' deal in the panel in the back for trailering. It just plugs inline of the taillights, but I thought these needed some kind of power and load equalizing circuitry to work. My trailer seemed to overload the blinker (flashing too fast) and not be wired right..... Hooked up a buddy's boat today and that's when I noticed the current problems with no blinker, overhead console or blower. BUT how the heck are they all related????? Hazard flasher works fine, as did everything else when purchased last week........ I've loosened and tightened the ground straps in the kickpanels and near the pwr. dist. box underhood. NOW WHAT???? HELP!!!!

Congrats on your purchase and we welcome to the site. Now why are manuals better than the autos...simple.....they are 10x stronger than those plastic ones ford put on and and when you lock the manuals they are locked up. As for the other problems all I can say is its an Explorer, stuff like that tends to happen quite often. Since it has high mileage I would have the tranny checked out, they are notorious for blowing up.

Why manuals? Cause they are cheaper replacements than new autohubs, and they will save you LOTS of grief in the long run, especially if you intend to use 4WD on a regular basis.

Can't help you with the electrical problems... sorry. You may find the following site of great use: Dead Link Removed

P.S. Welcome to the site!

thanks for the info and yep, that's what I figured on the hubs.... that's what I'll probably end up doing. I've never had manual hubs before and my offroading is often but mostly just out of necessity... going to tower sites and 'outings' into nowhere with the wife. Hills of WV, you know.... sometimes need 4x4 to get up the driveway! But, I've always had jeeps and autohubs. I never noticed the autohubs unlock then lock again when changing direction in 4x4. ?? Maybe it's just me. At any rate, I don't like the idea of needing to change direction and having the hubs unlocking on me when I don't have ten feet to travel....... I'm just going to run it down to the dealer and bite the bullet on the elect. problem I suppose. The hubs should be a cinch once I get the kit. I'll have them check the tranny too.... what usually gives in them??
thanks!
Randy
