I have a 94 Ranger it has the 2.3 engine and it has the Engine Service light on.

The problem I have is that I cannot get any codes from the diagnostic connector myself and when I took it to Autozone they could not get any codes either so this is my first problem.

The engine is idleing quite high and makes changing gear difficult as the revs run on when you put the clutch in. I have cleaned a few things and replace the Throttle Position Sensor with no effect.

Without the diagnostic codes resolving this problem may end up being an expensive replace and see exercise.

Has anyone got any ideas?

OBDII didn't start until 96', that's why you aren't getting any codes. There are ways to read codes off of pre '96 vehicles though, search and you'll find out how.

Thanks for your response nfrazer

I purchased a Ford Code Reader for OBD1 vehicles which gave no readings and I also tried the volt meter and jumper wire method which also did not give any readings.

Its like the Engine Service light is on and there is an idle issue with the motor but there is no error codes in the system.

I am not sure if there is a way of getting the error codes from somewhere else apart from the engine diagnostic connector.

What do you mean by "no codes".

No stored codes is code 111

Not getting anything at all is not good..

Thanks Maniak for your response,

The code reader shows "000" which at least lets me know the batteries in the code reader work but really does not help in working out the problem.

It has been suggested to me that I need to make sure the diagnostic connector needs to be cleaned really well for any corrosion as it lives under the hood not inside the car like a most OBD2 connectors.

I have also noticed that the diagnostic connector has six slots four of which are in a square pattern in the center of the connector but only three of them have wires running to the slots, 2 on the upper row and 1 on lower. The Ford OBD1 tool also has three tabs on it but with 1 on the upper row and 2 on the lower.

I need to get a wiring diagram for the Rangers Diagnostic connector and determine if the wiring at the connector has possibly been modified by a previous owner.

What a great way to spend a Monday holiday.
