I have the cold sticking in first gear problem on my 94. I hve read many....many posts about removing the tail piece off the transmission and cleaning up the cylinder to be sure its not sticking and this will usually stop the problem. How difficult is it to remove the tail piece from the transmission ?? will I loose the fluid when I do this ??. I have never worked on a automatic transmission before, I have dropped an oil pan or two and changed out an engine before. Is there a ling or a post shoring this or listing the steps involved in this job ???

Thanks in advance
Dwight

The transmission's tailshaft housing isnt very difficult to remove. The hardest part of the job will probably be the taking down the transfer case (if you have a 4wd).

I'm unsure whether or not you will lose fluid because I'm unaware of the A4LD .. but on the 2nd generation Explorer's transmission, a significant amount of fluid does pour out once the transfer case is separated from the transmission.

I've got the same exact problem. Note though, that you can at least get into 2nd if manually shifted into "2". I've been doing that instad of replacing the governor cuz it sounds like a pain in the [butt] to do. And it's a BS repair job

HHmmmm

May be something I can do to get me through untill spring and warmer weather. I only have a driveway to work in.

Thanks everyone

I have the same problem, but crazy as it sounds. If I let my vehicle (91 explorer sport) warm up for about 10 minutes, then my first gear isn't sticking. What in the world is that.

Same issue.... in fact a "no shift until warm" is the usual complaint.
