You say the front tires don't have power huh? Is the front driveline turning at least?

do you have automatic hubs?

automatic hubs- yes, i will check to see if the drive shaft is turning.

ok, the front drive shaft is turning when in 4wd but the wheels not so much

definitely sounds like the automatic hubs, see if they are packed with grease and do the cleaning procedure found here if they are. I just cleaned mine out on my 93 and it did wonders for them.

if i jack up the front (with it in 2wd) and turn the front drive shaft shouldnt it turn the wheel? well, it doesnt which wouldnt that also point towards the hubs? i wish it wasnt all iced over so i could fix it right now!!

I took the hub off and its packed with grease. the hub came off with the wheel so i didnt have a chance to mark on it or the stud. how important is that part?? the guys at o'reillys said i had to repack it with grease cause of the bearings. and what exactly does the ATF do?

Alright, I am in a good mood today, so here ya go :)
This has been covered a gazillion times, and can be found using the search in the 91-94 stock forum.

ATF is for cleaning the hubs:
You remove as much grease and junk as you can out with rags or what not first. Then soak the hubs in ATF overnight. Just stand them up like a bowl, and fill them to the top with ATF. Draining them for an hour or so the next day.

"Packing" them with grease:
Too much grease is a bad thing, so don't treat them like a normal set of wheel bearings. Just apply enough wheel bearing grease(finger swipe) to the inside of the hub to give it a film, & on the flange O-rings.

The plastic cam is what mostly breaks on these, and is near impossible to purchase alone. Once in a blue moon, someone on E-bay has em for sale. When cleaning them out, look for plastic fragments.

:salute:

yeah im doing a lot of searching and reading but sometimes i just like to ask questions. when i was cleaning my hub out it is suggested to move the spring mechanism up and down but i have no clue what mechanism they are referring to cause i didnt see anything. does anyone have a pick or maybe can explain to me what they are talking about. sorry, i just havent ever worked on this stuff.

anybody know how to post pictures?

Go to the new member forum. There is a write up on posting pictures with photobucket, or become elite. Some people use tiny pic which I know nothing about. I guess I'm sitting on a goldmine since I have 4 sets of cams, spindle nuts and thrust washers from when I have done hub conversions on customers rigs. You don't have to get crazy on cleaning them. Just do as good as you can and try them out maybe you have a broken one, then if they work get nasty with them. Do not pack them with grease, a light film is all you need. Also, the hubs do not need to be indexed you just need to make sure the hub flange slides all the way to the rotor, that means if there is a gap and when you push in it feels like you're pushing on a spring then it needs to be reclocked or spin the rotor until it slides all the way on. People not getting them on the right way before cranking the wheel tight is what breaks the cams. I've been running 33" swampers for 4 years without a problem, although I'm on borrowed time, and the most people having problems use 4X4 once a year while I'm out somewhere almost every weekend in snow or on trails, it's lack of maintence or having the wrong person working on your stuff. When the auto hubs break they do it with style by grenading the actual hub hat but one look inside them you can see why that happens.

I have a 94 ford explorer...I call it Frankenstein since I have put parts on it from all over to make it work...I have lots of questions...Help will be greatly appreciated...

What kind of questions? Almost any question you could have, there will be an answer if you search it.

ok, everything looks good on the inside of the hubs and on the on the axle. the plastic looks to be in good condition. any other ideas. maybe they are just put together wrong. im sure its very simple but im not exactly sure how these things work. what is supposed to happen with the automatics? something is supposed to kick out and engage or something?

is the part inside the hub supposed to be springy? there is no spring action inside and im thinking that is the problem. any thoughts?

ok, so maybe it is springy a little. it doesnt spring all the way up to be flush with the gear its on. the guy at the auto parts store told me i need a 4wd actuator but he couldnt give me a reason other than thats what i needed. what exactly does it do? where is it?
