95 4WD AUTO is acting up

My 4WD AUTO is acting up. The 4WD light don’t come on when I turn the switch from 2WD to 4WD AUTO while I am driving. It would turn on when I switch from a dead stop and neutral only. Just like the 4WD LOW.
If I turn the switch to 4WD AUTO while stop on neutral, it would engage to 4WD all the time. I know it’s on 4WD because I can hear the gear whine above 40 mph, all the wheels are turning on smooth dry pavements, it wouldn’t go off.
I can switch from 4WD AUTO back to 2WD while driving no problem, the whine would stop instantly.
So, I think I have lost the AUTOMATIC 4WD, instead, I have permanent 4WD when I turn the switch from 2WD to 4WD AUTO.
I hope I am making sense. What do you guys think may be the problem?

dont know what the problem is... but i know there are people on here who would love for their system to work exactly the way yours is now.

Really, I was thinking about the same thing. But wouldn't it cause the transfer case and drive train to wear out?
If I drive it like that with permanent 4WD on all the time.
It was good on snow yesterday, we had the first heavy snow fall of the season in Toronto during morning rush hour.
