Did you disconnect the battery for awhile to clear the code?

Do some searching on here as there's a ton of O/D light blinking posts. Personally have lots of experience with O/D blinking as we are on the 4th transmission and O/D blinking was always the first indicator. Three times it's been a broken overdrive band. This time it hasn't been fixed yet but still drives okay.

Search here with your codes and problem and you will be overwhelmed with information. I think people just get tired of seeing all the posts with O/D light blinking because it's way too common. I feel sick everytime I see someone post with O/D light blinking. Best wishes for your transmission!

thanks today my wife took the truck to work and called me telling me that the o/d light stoped blinking so thats good.thanks all for your reply but thats what this site is for to help each other with.thats why i like the site.

Hey guys i am new to this board so please don't flame me.

okay I have the same problem but with a loud cur chunk when coming to a stop. I have search all over this board looking for answers but this seems to be only thread I could find. I guess I should start with reseting the system and them change tranny fluid and filter? if that doesn't work take it to a tranny shop, huh since I can fix this problem myself?

i drove my explorer for 9 miles in 4low, at about 15 mph, after i turned it off and back on, the od light started flashing...all the way home it didnt shift into overdrive. took it to a mechanic and he reset the computer, and i havent had a problem since. (btw, he told me i needed a new tranny...obviously not the case). so i'd recommended disconnecting the battery again.

good luck

Hi Mo and Welcome: We had the OD blinking and the clunk when coming to a stop--twice now. For us, the diagnosis was broken overdrive band and tranny rebuilds. We took it to Ft Dodge Iowa which is too far for you.

You can try the old trick of disconnecting the battery and changing the fluid but don't be too hopeful. You may see evidence when you drop the pan.

Look around for a transmission shop that's not a chain and that will offer a good warranty for their work. If they offer an extended warranty, buy that if you're going to keep the X. We have 330K on our 95 and the engine is still going strong.

Good luck.

mjbach - well I think this is serious now that I had a chance to drive it. The Cur-Chunk happen in every gear and the OD light is blinking constanly I tried putting it in 4wd and 4 low and that made it act crazy with all the lights blinking (I didn't drive it just turn the switch). I will try and find a tranny shop locally. How much did it cost for them to fix yours? You this would happen just after the warranty ran out too.

I think it cost around $1300 and then on the next one we were lucky that it EXPLODED just under their original warranty so we got a price break on it. Ft Dodge has since raised their prices and probably changed their warranty too. They might be able to recommend a shop in your area.

There should be lots of information on this website about O/D blinking and maybe others who live in your area have already posted with a good shop near KC. When my daughter's tranny went out on her 97 (o/D blinking and clunking) I called a bunch of shops in ATL until I found one that seemed knowledgeable. but they charged a lot more because hers was a 5R55 transmission with even more electronics.

Your automatic is a 4R55 and is different that the A4LD from earlier Explorers in that it has more electrical parts controlled by the computer.

I think it's terrible what has come to be accepted as a normal lifespan for these Explorer transmissions. However, people seem to love their Explorers, as both my husband and daughter do. I drive a VW TDI (diesel) and don't understand this whole SUV thing but that's another story.

There are some national rebuilders that offer pretty decent warranties if you can get someone to do the swap.

I can do the swap but I would like to find someone that sells rebuilt trannies. I drive a mustang but this is first problem that I have had with this explorer. It has been good to us and we have had it for 3 years and we bought it used and bought the extended warranty as well, but it ran out 4k ago. I guess that is the luck of the draw. I am taking in a for a free diagnostics tomorrow.

This site is awesome and I can't beleive how helpful you all are....

Thanks for all your help.:D

Well i took it in to the shop and they reset the computer and the problem went away. The guy said he can't fix what is not broken yet.

Saved me at min $1300. :D :D :D
