'95 Explorer doesn't want to start when hot.

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I was wondering if any of you ever had this problem, and what you did about it. I have a '95 Explorer Sport 4X4 that last fall didn't want to start sometimes after it got hot. When it finally did start, it would run very rough, and I'd have to hold the brake, gas it and pull it in gear to get going. Once I got going down the road, it was OK. As the weather got cooler, this quit happening. Now that the weather is warming up again, I want to be able to fix this if it starts doing it again. It has 58,000 miles on it. Thanks for any suggestions.

Did the check engine light ever come on? I bet you have a problem with the MAF or temp sensor, and that is then causing the computer to change the mixture/timing and causing a problem. It is possible that there is some other electronic component under the hood that is getting too hot, but you should get a check engine indicator. The computers in these things make it pretty easy to diagnose problems, if you know how to talk to them...

Thanks pacman. Yes, the check engine light did come on and go off; I forgot to add that. I guess if there are several things that could cause this, I might come out cheaper taking it to a dealer & letting them put it on their machine rather than buy parts that I don't know for sure are bad.

If the check engine light came on then the computer will store the code which the dealer can retreive with thier computer. It may be worth it to take it to the dealer and have them do a diagnostic test on it to see what is wrong. Then you may be able to fix it yourself. Good luck!

Well, it did it again ! I took it to the Ford dealer and they checked the computer for stored codes & said that there were none. The service guy there printed off a bulletin from Ford that said some people have had the type problem that I've had, and that it was due to vapor locking caused from gas stations having winter blend fuel in their tanks in warm weather. It also stated that a remedy for this problem was to take the fuel cap off & put it back on to release the pressure from the tank. I thought that the fuel caps were vented. I have a locking cap on mine, but it is supposed to be a direct replacement. Anyway, I hope this works.
