hey all , got a few questions about the 95 motors ....i know every body has read my v-8 thread ( thats still in the works ) so don't think bad of me when i say i'm going to get a 95 v-6 motor .found someone on the net today thats got a blown 4.0 and is already out of the truck and is giveing it away for free ! yes FREE :p:...yeah,yeah,yeah i know "well it's blown a head gasket and needs to be re-built" ....true but, i would like to have it for parts for the one i got ( despite the v-8 conversion) ...i like to have extra parts laying around for future use is all i can say lol .so for free parts i say hell yeah !

i assume that the 95's were just like the 94 ..push rod type engine...so will anything from this motor or vise-versa from my 94 work with each other.

if anything i can get the motor and sell parts from it .it's a complete motor and has all electronics and fuel injection systems intact with 260k on it .

thanks .....

Well Mr. Boggs, I have read your thread per your request. Everything seems straight, what's wrong with your V6? I'm not aware of any problems, maybe I missed something?

As far as I know, I believe that the 1995 Explorer is basically the first generation with a front end change and interior change. I don't think the SOHC came along until a few years later, so you'd be right on with the 4.0 OHV being the same. Just watch out though, they might have the plastic intake on that year, but I can't say for sure.

My engine is completely stock except for the air intake (if that's a mod), and the alternator I just put on there, everything else is 100% stock, and I'm over the 260k mark.

I say weigh your options, do you HAVE to go V8? Why not get this engine, build it up, and Supercharge it or Turbocharge it? All up to you, but if you're going to have another V6 engine when your going to a V8 eventually, I think maybe it's better to hold off?

my AIM Screen name is the same as it is on here, hit me up if you want to.

nothing wrong with the motor .
i am haveing some idleing issues latelly .
i have also considered building this v-6 instead of going v-8 (trying to keep my options open) .
also if someone gives you something for free and maybe you can't use it for anything right now ..still a good thing you know.

thanks for the advice mr.josh.

4.0 compatable with 3.8 supercharged

will the heads off a 3.8 suprecharged thunderbird motor interchange with my 98 4.0 ex

ummm, i wanna say no ...different motor and engine sizes

Yeah, plus the 3.8L V6 is just the V8 with two cylinders chopped off the front. I read this earlier today but not sure where, which would lead me to think they aren't compatible. But any junkyard now a days will have an Explorer (or at least it should) with engines that are good enough to pull off parts.

Boggs, I think you just need to figure out what you need and go that route. Do you want the "power" of a V8 with better transmission options and modification options, or a V6 that has some building potential, but allows you to keep a "stock system". Meaning that you wouldn't have to change anything really, you'd disassemble to rebuild and then put back together again, so what you all ready know will help you out.

Plus, if you're going to have another engine, just rebuild that on an engine stand and then put it in, and you'll lose maybe a day or two of driving instead of weeks.

I have a '94 & a '95. Both 4.0 Ohv. They are not at all compatible. The '95 is the first yr 2nd gen, plenty of changes from 1st to 2nd gen. Suspension is all together diff. Brakes are completely diff. The int is diff but is swappable, mounts are the same. The engines are diff, the heads are diff, and some obd11 electronics are in the '95. Intakes, tps, egr, maf, and more are diff. Trannys are diff, and so on. I would not buy a 95 engine for parts for a 1st gen. The heads prolly need rebuilding after 100 k. The push rods and rockers give out from a flawed design. Not enough oil can reach the rockers after wear and tear. They mushroom, resulting in shorter length, and less and less oil can reach the rockers.

Just my 02!

thank you sir :salute:... you just saved me a hoyst rental .

well.. i don't wanna be disagreeable with anybody but.... I'm running a '95 4.0 OHV in my '92 X.

All I really changed was the oil pan sensor and the upper intake. I left the '95 alternator and bracket, (it was higher output) and it did use the same belt.

I did use the '92 y-pipe.. the 92's have one O2 sensor.

Unless I forgot something minor, everything else worked perfectly... and it outruns my gals '93 hands down. :)

Of course, the front suspension and stuff was all different. I did save quite a few things from the '95 for parts though.. starter, 4x4 shift motor (which required a plug swap), MAF housing and sensor, and a few other oddities.

i would like to have it for parts for the one i got / so will anything from this motor or vise-versa from my 94 work with each other.

I was speaking of using a 95 for spare parts for a 94.

A complete swap is a whole nother deal.

;)

ah.. I read ya gman.

I had understood boggs to mean he was picking up a 95 motor only for free, as a spare, and that will work great for him.

I had picked up a whole 95, and used it for parts. We got it cheap enough to sell out most things... tranny, t-case, interior and exterior, etc... and ended up making money on the deal. The motor, rearend (disk!), rear bumper, several sensors and doo-dads, rear springs, wheels, starter, shift motor, all work for swaps. The tranny and t-case is worth a pretty penny to someone who needs them, and they're not the same as our 91-94's. Never even looked at swappability on those. doo-dads like the MAF housing and sensor, IAC sensor, O2 sensors, TPS all worked and went to the "emergency use" bin. At $100 for a starter or alternator.. yep I kept that stuff too. As well as AC compressor too BTW. Lots of dollars worth of stuff there.

The 95 engine itself, as far I could tell, didnt have anything different other than two extra engine mount holes.. which would prevent using the early motors in the 95, irrelevant to us in this case. Like said before, the upper intake had to be swapped too, no biggie.

So no.. the whole 95 isn't a totally swappable thing, but it's got alot we can use. I sure did!

My bad as well, I was responding to a comment about the whole truck as a swap, AND just the engines.

As far as engines only goes...The parts that are swappable are the little stuff. The little stuff can add up to a fair amount, but some of that stuff would be better off buying new. The blocks and heads and the likes are different. Trans t-case, drive shafts, rear ends are diff as well. I am sure some can be used with some mods, but as for a straight swap, I dont think so.

Either way dont matter, as boggs was only asking about the engines anyways. Not for a spare engine, but a parts motor.

Sorry for the confusion.

Oh no problem gman... I'd think if we continue to hijack (lol) we're adding to the info he wondered about anyway.. hehe

I'm curious about internal differences you mentioned on the OHV's. Instead of having you write a book I'll google it to death for a little while now. :)

hooah!

welllllll ....... sorry to say that the person with the motor has now gave it awayto someone else...... the night i found it and contacted them over e-mail i was waiting to hear back from them and gave my cell # to call me and did not hear anything back from them so today they call at 12:00 asking me if i can still come and pick it up and that they had to have it out from a rental home they have ....could not do it till monday so after reading what yall said i thought that maybe i should get it and called back...crap:rolleyes:
lol ..........oh well better luck next time i suppose is all i can say.....

thanks anyways . . . . .

btw: don't worry about hijacking lol ......alot of times thats when the most good is done in a post .
