Hello, my ABS light came on and I had it diagnosed and was told the hydrolic ABS unit is bad.

I did a bunch of searching and found a company that specializes in them (rebuilding). Contacted them and found a great price on a rebuilt unit ($125).

The question is... My mechanic is going to put it in. However there seems to be some concern about BLEEDING the system. Several articles say you can bleed it as usual. Some say a "suction" bleeding system is better (which I have). The one article that bothers me says you MUST have a SPECIAL device that activates the hydrolic solenoids or it won't bleed?

Can someone please advise?

Thanks
Alan

Im almost sure that you have to cycle the solenoids to bleed the ABS pump. Sorry

I too have a '95, in checking the ford service manual, I find no mention of cycling solenoids.
Hope this helps. Service manual is available on CD, at e-bay.

Thanks for the responses. I spoke to the company that sold me the ABS unit and they say you can bleed the system like normal. I hate conflicting info..... then I spoke to a mechanic friend who looked up the proceedure in his "system" and it says you MUST use a special device/adapter to use to cycle the internals of the ABS unit to get all the air out.

So, it isn't clear with conflicting info. I think my plan is to let my friend do the job assuming it can be done as usual. If we can't bleed the system then I have already confirmed with FORD that they can/will do it for me (for $120). So that is my backup plan.

Thanks all,
Alan

If you don't bleed the ABS unit you may introduce air into the system after your first ABS stop. Best thing is to activate ABS a few times near your house, and if you still have a firm pedal you are good to go.
