My Explorer has recently been having some problems. First I started noticing a feeling as if the brakes were slowly being applied, or something was grabbing, along with the o/d light flashing. about every few minutes it does that and the o/d light will flash, the light stops flashing sometimes though. Sometimes when I slow down it will try to die, and even sometimes it does die. it seems to be the most noticeable around 35-45 mph. At highway speeds with the cruise control on(65-70mph) it isn't even noticeable. Sometimes it also makes a clunking noise as its doing the other problem. It has 180,000 miles on it. Does anyone have any ideas on what this may be? I was told that it could be the torque converter but I'd like to get a few more "sure" opinions before I shell out the cash and time to put a new one in for nothing.

I think it might be the torque converter clutch solenoid. That part is modulated just like the EPC, so this puts them into a category of "high wear" parts. Gets the codes read first before throwing parts at it.

I'm taking it to the dealership monday and hopefully they will be able to tell me what it is.

Also, would you have a general idea on what that part would cost? Ive never priced those before.

Thanks:thumbsup:

Wait til you get the codes. The TCC lockup solenoid is about $40 and easily replaced, but I am not so sure that is your problem necessarily, at least at this point - at least it does not explain ALL your problems. The dying is likely a torque convertor that is not unlocking.... like stopping without pushing in the clultch on a manual - BB is on the right track here to suspect that part, I'd just feel better to have the code(s) first, just as BB wisely suggested.

Frankly at your mileage the EPC (electronic pressure control) solenoid is also in need of replacement if you are in there, they are about $130.

I could handle the cost of these parts, I'm just hoping its not my transmission.
