Just joined today after owning several Explorers over the years. I’ve read many informative posts here in the past but can’t seem to find one that addresses my current problem. The 4x4 has been working intermittently since last fall, sometimes it wouldn’t work unless you turned the key off and then restarted the vehicle but recently quit completely. No indicator lights in the instrument cluster except at startup. Fuses are all good and I’ve replaced the transfer case shift motor and the 4x4 switch with new parts. Still nothing. Vacuum lines for the CAD are all good and connected. The only thing I can find that’s not working is that both of the CAD solenoids have voltage and ground wether the 4wd switch is in the on or off position and neither solenoid allows vacuum to pass through. It’s my understanding that one solenoid holds the CAD engaged and the absence of vacuum allows the axle to disengage. Does the sensor at the CAD tell the GEM to allow engage of the transfer case or is it just for the 4x4 light in the instrument cluster ? I’m thinking mine is a GEM problem since I have no 4auto or 4 low and both solenoids are receiving voltage and ground at the same time. I don’t have the other common GEM issues but sometimes the interior lights will stay when all the doors are closed until I drive a several feet, this doesn’t happen all the time but more often than not and never with the headlights on. Any help would be greatly appreciated
