I have a 5 speed 92 XLT 4 dr with 240K miles on it and way too much rust, It is starting to get to the point where small breakages are happening faster than I can keep up (I do have to work too ;). A customer came in and bought an 04 FX4 Supercrew from me cause their Explorer broke, a 95 XLT 4 dr 120K - nice truck with a bad auto tranny that they will sell pretty cheap. I am considering buying it from them and parting out the 92 (it has a lot of good parts and a near new looking interior - yes the door panels are good :p ) I know the tranny it self is more or less a bolt up and that the puter will need changed to a man trans puter (maybe from the 92?). I am curious about any other gremlins that I will encounter. I will be doing this myself in the drive way (I am capable) but seeings as this is my wifes daily driver I can't have it down fopr 3 weeks figuring out odds and ends. I can take off a Mon (normally off Sun and Tues) if nessicary so that I can have a 3 day weekend to do it. I haver a Haynes man on the trucks also. My wife doesn't like auto trannys so just fixing the 95 would not be an option. Thanks in advance!

You should be ok if you get a ECU from a 5 speed 91-92 X. You wouldn't want to use the 95 cause it's OBDII & there's sensors on it your 92 doesn't have so the ECU will be a mess. You can make it work with some know how & time. The 4WD setup is different also so you would need the tailshaft housing from a 1st gen x to mate the tranny to the X-fer case. You should be able to use the clutch lines, pedal etc from the 95.
