I'm on an rebuilt tranny with about 90k (168k total) on it and was wondering what it would take to put a 4 speed auto in? Different computer, do I have to alter the driveshaft or transfer case position? Just a question as this will become a daily driver in heavy traffic to make room for a new project.

New steering colume too, not to mention the parts you will need. The autos have colume shifters. The manual is a floor shifter.

whoa buddy! Your titile says Auto-> Manuel your message says Manual-> Auto, what you trying to do? If you want to swap from 5-speed to auto you can have mine, it was just rebuild 6 months ago and I'll gladly take that 5-speed away from ya! But honestly if you have to have an auto go with the A4OD tranny wich is a truck tranny, shy away from the mitsubishi built P.O.S. A4LD ( The stock auto tranny ) it sucks like, really bad!

My bad, yeah, I'm looking to convert from a 5 speed manual to the 4 speed auto. Is the 4 speed auto really that much of a POS?

well, let me put it this way, the auto is fine for what it was intended, for grandma suv buyer that really needs a car, not a suv, to escort a few people and some groceries around town. Like that the tranny will last for more or less the lifetime of the vehicle. BUT if you ever tow, go off-road, are real heavy footed, or any of that such good stuff the tranny is really prone to over heating and damaging some VERY expensive planetary gearsets and related componets. If you don't believe me then see how popular the questions toward upgrading to the A4OE tranny is! ( A tranny available in some E-series vans and some F-series pickups ) But then again I am biased against all awfullmatics.

dont swap!!!! the 5-speed is stronger than the A4LD. You will nd up rebuilting the auto sooner than the 5-speed.

Yeah i'm with Kris, i got tired of pulling my auto and rebuilding so i changed my auto out of a manual! But if you do decide to do it, let know, i have almost all the parts you are going to need to convert!

Happy trailes!
