I had the tranny repaired 2 months ago (bands for 2nd gear and OD). This is the orginal transmission with 150,000 miles on it. These repairs cost $800.00. The mechanic said the rest of the transmission looked like new. Recently it slipped out of 2nd gear, we checked the fluid and it was over full by 2 qts. Husband took it back to the repair shop and they drained fluid out. He did not discuss possible damage from too much fluid. Now it constantly slips when downshifting to second and hesitates in all other gears. I even hear a clunking noise coming from the front--when slowing down on occasion. I am considering trading it off. Went to Ford today and drove the Escape. Did not like it at all! I have a new Santa Fe in my driveway that I am trying out for a day. They offered to give me $5,000 trade in--even knowing the possibility of transmission problems. (they made it look good on paper in otherwords) but I know the price of the Santa Fe is slightly inflated. I have trimmed it down to two options, fix the Explorer or trade it off for a new vehicle. What would you do?

If they will give you 5000, then let em have it. Although, I would try to get something other than the Hyandai unless you have your heart set on it. How about a v8 explorer, they have a basically bulletproff drivetrain.

Decided against the Santa Fe

Hi,

Well it is back to the drawing board. I didn't buy the Santa Fe for several reasons. It was front wheel drive--and although I kept repeating to the salesman that I wanted a 4WD, he continued to show me the 03 FWD models. He couldn't shut up and listen! They had a sticker price of $25,500 on the LX 03's and I know the MSRP price for an 04 is $24,000. He didn't listen to that either, and wouldn't deal. He also changed the price on what he said he would give me for the Explorer. He told us that the Santa Fe would tow 5,000 lbs. We don't believe that either and are looking for something that will pull our boat. I also talked to a someone who was the service rep at Huyndai and he said they are in the shop constantly. Maybe I should get the tranny rebuilt on the Explorer???

LOLOLOLOL...I would love to see one tow 5000 pounds and not be wound out.

No kidding!

The sales mgr. even tried to explain the 5,000 lb towing capacity by quoting tongue weight etc...telling me the LX 3.5 L could pull more. Well it is the bigger engine, but still I was getting the run around. We read the owners manual, and not taking into consideration passengers etc. the max was not over 2,800 lbs. Not very good sales people I would say! I don't sell cars--but I could see what they were doing wrong!

By the way I drove this vehicle on the interstate in snow and ice today. It's a cold day in hell...and it would not live up the the Explorer under those conditions.

New Tranny

Hey Nancy, if you really like the explorer which I am sure you do, I would just invest in getting a new tranny from JasperEngine.com (dont know if its knew but there warranty is great its 3yrs or 75,000 miles) we had ours replaced at 215,000 miles and its running like new. If you dont have any other issues with your explorer just have the tranny replaced. Hope that helps.

Hi,

I have an appt with the tranny shop today. If it is only the band for 2nd gear--that is what they fixed a few months ago. I think it might be more than that, but I have decided I would rather spend $2,500 for the Explorer compared to $25,000 for a new vehicle. I was not satisfied with anything that I test drove. Thanks for the link to the website I will check it out. Although I have had a few problem, the motor and body are sound!
So I prefer to keep mine. I'll keep you all updated. :-)
Thanks for the replies.

Tranny in 95 XLT still not right!

The tranny shop called Saturday, the man tells me the Explorer is fixed that it was only a vacuum line. This is the same shop that overfilled the fluid when they replaced the bands! I figured I would take it back to them in case any of the damage was caused by something they did or didn't do.

I picked the Exp. up today, and now it is hesitating for about 15 seconds before it goes into reverse and drive.Once moving it goes into 2nd gear fine. It was parked in a lot about a block away--so I just drove it home and called. He tells me he didn't notice the hesitation, but it was warm when he drove it. He also told me that it is not a problem--they do this sometimes.
Well the last Explorer that did this, the tranny was gone with in a week! I was so happy that it was only a vacuum line. Yeah Right! Bet it will leave me stranded--but now I am going to drive it until it won't go anymore!
Just a question for you guys. What kind of damage can be done from over filling the fluid?

Give Opera House a pm:D He is the man when it comes to tranny's

My brother overfilled his tranny and it was gone in a week. He explained what it does but I can't remember now. If you want more detailed info on overfilling I will ask him.
