Can someone point me in the right direction for quantitiy and part number for the 02 sensors on a '96 Explorere with the 4.0L V6, automatic tranny? I've read though a bunch of the 02 sensor threads, but I'm still a little unsure if there are 3 or 4 sendors on my truck. Then when I put my VIN into the motorcraft lookup, it retursn 3 part numbers (DY1092, DY1095, and DY831) with one of each in the vehicle. Does anyone know which part number(s) I need and how many to swap them all?

Thanks!

There are three 02 sensors in the truck. One is after the cat converter and is very very rarely changed. The other two are before the cat converters.

You asking this question raises another one for me....May I ask why you want to change your sensors? You have to know specifically why and which sensor you want to change, they are not usually a maintenance item.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Few reasons...

1) Got a CEL and the codes pointed to 1 upstream and 1 (apparently the only) downstream sensor.

2) Trucks at just about 100K miles which the service manual and several threads here inidicates is the expected service life for 02 sensors

3) Read in several threads here and other sites that replacing old 02 sensors can help improve mileage.

An o2 sensor code can mean other issues though, just understand that. You can possibly get those same codes if you replace the sensors. It would be great if you can post the exact code.

I would not bother with the downstream after the cat o2 sensor, it has NOTHING to do with mileage. It exists only to verify that the catalytic converter works.

Replacing 02 sensors as PM is debatable, a scan can tell you for sure if they are working properly or not. Replacing them won't hurt though...
