I own a 96 explorer. It only has the automatic 4wd in high range. I understand that newer models have both 4wd automatic and 4wd high range. I was wondering if a 4wd computer swap between a 96 and a 97 or later was possible. If anyone has done this can you let me know. I would like to have full time four wheel drive high range on it.

First of all, welcome to the site, you will find a wealth of information here, also available by using the search function: Search

There are some people who are currently looking into doing this and the idea has been looked into and tossed around by a lot of the 95-96's. I am thinking of just putting in a manual t-case from an old Explorer/Ranger/Bronco II (Certainly would be easier and cheaper). MikeFox (I believe is his screenname) is currently trying to figure out how the system works and how to convert it. Help this helps! And again, welcome to the site!!:)

I have wired mine up the way I think it might work but haven't been able to give it a real test. I had it up on jack stands but that didn't give me the results I wanted. I did try on some loose gravel but the fronts in either 4auto or my 4hi didn't turn at all. I don't know if I didn't punch it hard enough or if my idea disabled the 4auto all together. One thing I did when I wired it was to put on connectors that would allow me to put it back to normal without much fuss. I am waiting for it to rain now since that will at least tell me if the 4auto still works. I sometimes use it to get out into traffic faster without tire slippage. Imaging, waiting for it to rain in the N/W. Never thought I would ever say that. It might be awhile until I can post any real results but when I get them you all will be the first to know.

The idea of putting in a manual T/C maybe a better idea in the end. Or maybe even an electric shift one from a Ranger of the same year since they did n't use the Controltrack (I think).
