OK, I have just spent the past hour reading various threads. Lots of really good information. I am just not sure I am finding the right answer.

I have a '96 Explorer XLT 4.0 w/165K. That year came with an autoselctor switch on the dash. 2WD, 4WD Auto, 4WD Lo are the options. I usually keep it in 2WD unless I am traveling under 30 Mph and there is heavy snow. When I select 4WD Auto, I can feel the 4WD engage. If I go above 35Mph, the 4WD & 4WD Lo lights start flashing (I think this is the same 6 times other people are mentioning). At this point I don't know if the 4WD is still engaged, but I usually pull over, shut off the engine, put the selector back to 2WD, turn the engine back on, and I am off and running, no more flashing lights.

Also, if I am in 4WD, driving slowly, and I make a turn, I hear the awful grinding noise that makes me straighten the turn-out.

So is the same problem everyone else is finding where the correction involves the brown wire, etc.

I am a newbie and novice so any help would be appreciated. I don't plan on doing the work myself, but anything I can the tranny shop would help.

Please run a search in the transmission and transfer cases forum of this site. There is TONS of information there. This comes up several times a week this time of year. I'm sure you will find plenty of responses.
