The light is on and stays on. I've tried shutting down and re-starting, but
the light stays on. I've driven it short distances since the light came on and
the brakes feelperfectly normal. However, I'm scared to drive it until I get this resolved.

How many abs sensors does my '96 have? I'm assuming 2 front and 1 rear (on the rear differential). How much to they cost?

I want to avoid an expensive repair bill and I'm very mechanically inclined so
I was hoping for some advice as to what steps I should do to troubleshoot
this problem.

Thanks!

hey just try and clean the sensors. if you pull the wheels off you will see wires running to area around the hubs. take some carb cleaner and a rag and spray away. They are like magnets and they hold on to some stuff. if you have to take the ten millimeter bolts out and clean the sensor that way. after doing that fire it up and see what happens. don't be afraid to drive it. it is ok. let me know

hey also forgot to tell you to check all the fuses and relays under hood and dash.

You shouldn't have any problem driving the X. You still have 100% of your braking power, but you will not be able to take advantage of the Ant-Braking-System (ABS). The earlier vehicles doesn't have ABS and still on the road today!

There is a discussion about this on this board, but I forgot the threat. Anyway, under the passenger side seat you see a yellow wire connector. I believe the transistor tend to go bad and can be replace. You might do the search and read up on the part number.

Again, don't be affraid to drive the X. Its still a safe vehicle even without the ABS.

Steven pull the bulb out and forget about it! You don't need it in Wilmington anyway! Most times the repair is over 6 hunnerd... Waaaay too much for any benefit.
Big Jim ;)

I wouldn't pull the bulb out. ABS is a very good system additional to your regular brake. It keeps you from skidding or having your wheels locked up while hard braking so you can steer away from the danger. I don't think its going to cost you many more then some cleaning and checking for malfunctions.

I think checking the codes is the first logical step.
