I am looking to get a 4x4 explorer. I have one that's 2wd but I need a 4wd. This car lot down the road had one. A 96 like the one I already have but it's 4wd. For 3000. I tried the 4x4 out at the lot and it goes into 4x4 auto ok. I tried 4low and it didn't light up. Then the both 4x4 lights went to blinking. I read you have to have it in neutral and foot on brake for it to go in 4 low. I did have it in neutral but I can't remember if my foot was on the brake. I drove it down the road it drives ok I tried it again same result except the second time I tried 4 low I hear a pretty violent clunk. Then the flashing started. Continued to flash all the way back. Also noticed a slight wining on the way back like it never came out of 4wd. I was stopped and in neutral both times but like I said I can't remember if my foot was on the brake. So my question is does this sound like a vehicle I should stay away from?

sounds like a lot of money for a 1996 . i would not be so concerned about the 4 low thing. my 2000 clunked everytime i locked it in 4 low. never did affect it had 189000 on it when i sold it ..

Blaze, if you need 4X4, it would be a good idea to be sure yer gettin' it! There are often clunks and such when shifting in/out of 4-LOW, but flashing lites are a no-no, something's likely not quite right.

I DO know the brake pedal must be depressed when shifting in/out of 4-LOW on 3rd. Gen., but I am not sure about 2nd Gen.

$3000 seems a bit high, but mileage, condition determine value, too. If SELLER knows something stinks in the wind, or you TELL HIM, you might buy it cheaper, if you care to take the chance on needing fixin'. It does not sound like a serious problem, but I could be wrong there. imp
