I think it may have a headgasket leak. And the transmission slips and clunks into every gear. It wasnt really well taken care of before i got it. The suspension is good on it but the shocks have a little to much bounce, want to beef it all up including the rear.

I want to make it a project. I was also thinking about looking for a used v8 explorer and working on that instead.

Since your a member here you know that those auto trannys are stronger than these 4.0 tranny's its just you have that awd system hooked up to the tranny but you could get the BW4406 t-case and bolt up to it, or get an F-150 tranny that has a manual or pushbutton 4X4 t-case already attatched.

How do you know it has a head gasket leak? 4.0L engines can give funny symptoms if the themostat is old, the dash sender gauge was never changed or the coolant is tired and needs a flush. I would also flush the heater core. Make sure you bleed the coolant as per the manual.

What is the condition of your trans fluid? It wont hurt to drop the pan, change the filter and fluid. Do not use any flushing machines.
