So I purchased a 4.0L 96 explorer about 2 months back. It has had a very slight rough idle but that is not really the issue.

From time to time I will start the explorer and the idle will be very rough. This isnt a frequent occurrence, maybe 1 in 10 starts where it does this. All the other times it idles perfect. The thing that I find most strange though is that when I rev the engine that does not fix the idle however quickly after I start driving, even though the RPMS are not very high the idle fixes and its back to normal.

Any suggestions on what to look for first? Changed fuel filter, now I am going to clean the IAC and throttle body.

I just find it very odd that giving it gas in park does not fix the idle but right when I start driving it goes back to normal.

Also this is not an issue of being cold, I am in Florida.

Same problem on my 94. Wish I had an answer for you but here is a free bump.

had a similar problem on my 96. turned out to be cracked ceramic on one plug. id check them. none the less sounds like a spark problem. check plugs, wires, coil pack
