I have recently purchased a 96 XLT.
The temperature gauge will go from cold to half way on the gauge within 90 seconds. The heater is blowing lukewarm air at this time. The heater will continue to get warmer, but the temperature gauge will generally remain at the half way point.
Warmer weather has had no effect on the initial operating of the vehicle however the temperature gauge will go almost to hot if the air is on and there is a load on the vehicle, such as a steep hill.
The temperature gauge and the sending unit have been replaced with no difference.
The engine does not show any signs of being hot and there is no loss of coolant.
