96 explorer with 98 4x4 trans ?

I bought a 96 explorer that the previous owner had replaced the trans with a 98 trans, trans is gushing out fluid, about a quart per 10 minutes running. I changed the front seal and found that the bell housing and torque converter are from the 96.
Where do I look for part numbers to find out what transmission and torque converter I really have in this explorer?
The truck drives and shifts fine, but it leaks like a siv, any help is welcome

Hmm, the 96 comes with a 4R55E, the 98 would have the 5R55E if it is the 4.0

Check out the transmission section and try a search. Pretty awesome way to find stuff fast.

Yes it is a 4.0 v6 4X4
Are the bell housings interchangeable between the 4R55E and the 5R55E?
And will a 5R55E bell housing and torque converter bolt up to a 96 4.0?
