So I'm working on the A4LD transmission (kinda) in my '91 EB. I'm going to repair and/or replace the Governor. I'm also going to be replacing the filter & draining and replacing as much fluid as I can.

I was just curious if there are any other good preventative maintenance steps I could or should take while I've got things pulled down? The minor stuff that is. I was thinking maybe a modulator too? Not sure if mine is bad, but I'm getting a horrible exhaust smell so I'm thinking some trans fluid might be getting sucked up and blown out the exhaust.

I'm not getting into dropping the trans & doing any sort of rebuild here. It's a $250 beater that I bought off a friend. I'm just doing little stuff to it here & there on the weekends to have something to do. But that's not say I won't put money into it.

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The modulator would be a good preventative measure replacement while you're at it, and a band adjustment might be in order, too! Might even think about an auxiliary cooler and filter, too! Good luck with it.

Welp I've got 'er all put back together, everything was awesome for the first test drive. Took it for another drive this morning and it's still doing the delayed 1-2 shift when cold, bummer. Guess the used Governor I put it still sticks every once and awhile. But at least I got the new modulator in. Thanks for the input folks. That's all for this thread for now. :)
