96 Limited running bad, died and won't start

UPDATED,96 Limited running bad, died and won't start

I got a call from my oldest son who is driving my 96 Limited. Saying it died this morning. It started alright first thing this morning. On his way to class it started making strange noises( rattling,etc) after stopping at a light. about 1/2 mile farther after stopping for turning traffic it died. will not start.

I went an took a look at it. the starter only whines when trying to start. almost like it engages the flywheel. All fluids are present and full. no visible problems seen. Fuel pump starts as normal. The truck has 180K on it, I got it in Feb 06 with 165K on it.

Ideas thoughts. Should I take it to my mechanic or??

Well I just came from the truck and know it seems to crank differently. It seems to engage but doesn't seem to turn over the engine. no belts turn etc.

Update, got a call from my mechanic with bad news. it seems that either the bolts holding the flex plate to the crank broke/came out or the crank broke. Makes sense from what my son said the the truck was running but wouldn't move.
Well it might be all she wrote for this one as the mechanic said it is a major job about $400 in labor minimum then if it needs to be drilled and tapped etc. That is if the bolts broke. if the crank broke I may be out the $400.
I may just swap parts to my 95 and save other parts, part out. We have gotten out money out of it. paid $1300 for it. used it 20 months so only cost us about $70 a month. plus we get all the parts from her.
