i was trying to help..... ford tranneis are notorius for problems.... and the first sign of failure is losing the upper gears... then nothing works...

I dont know what motor it is. I just know its a v6.

Sorry I read the bottom part and thought u were writing it to me. Also it works fine for hours, no slipping or anything as along as i keep it in D.

Glacier991 posted an answer to this in another recent thread. Did you run a search and read about the problem. This has been covered many times before. The threads are out there. Look and ye shall find....

My tranny went out on my '96 limited v8 at 115k. And that's longer than some have lasted. You more than likely need a new/ rebuilt tranny. I had mine rebuilt. Cost about 1,800 bucks. Good luck...If you do have it rebuilt, make sure that you take it back in when they suggest for them to make sure that everything is functioning properly. It's about 90 days afterward.

Rebuild parts are only $200-$300, finding the problem before internal hard parts damage is a wise idea. Don't drive it if it shows major symptoms. Burned up transmissions often fail multiple times.

That being said, check the fluid carefully, keep an eye on the fluid level. Do you have a trans cooler, has the truck been used to tow with?
Chris, am I correct in assuming that the trans is an A4LD or 4R55E, both suspect transmissions?

If the overall feel of the transmission is good, when in Drive, try installing a TransGo correction kit. Check here first with searches, for similar symptoms. Find the possible parts that you might need to fix the problem. Buy those parts from a trans parts shop. Find someone who can install those parts, with the TransGo kit.

Spending a couple of hundred dollars for parts that may prolong the transmissions life, is better than waiting for it to fail, and hoping a rebuild will keep it from happening again. Good luck,

Got this problem!

My moms 96 explorer has been doin the same exact thing. I don't believe its a serious problem. When coming out of park or reverse and stop at drive it stays in neutral. If you pass drive and drop it to 2nd or 3rd and then back up to drive it goes in perfectly.

I believe that its an electronic problem. There is a shift range sensor connected to the linkage. I thought about changing it to see if it helped, but anyone who drives it has gotten used to just passing drive, and popping it back up so its not a priority, ha ha!

This tranny was replaced a few months ago and it did the same thing with the other tranny. The linkage and shift range sensor are still original we didn't change them. Thats why I believe its the culprit.

Let me know if you find anything.

Thanks

repare or rebuild

Was it replaced or rebuilt? I think some shops dont change valve body when they rebuild it. Why did they replace/rebuild? did it eventualy die.

The valve body isn't replaced in a rebuild, that is a forever part, unless something goes wrong with it.

If any debris gets into the transmission(burned up), then the valve body should be completely disassembled. Completely removing every part from a valve body, and reassembling it, is a massive job in itself. There are dozens of tiny parts, and most shops will avoid that, or try to talk a customer into paying for a new one.

The last tranny we replaced because it was slamming into gear when it shifted. We had it flushed out, but a few months later it went from slamming into gear to slipping like all hell. We put in a used one for about 500 bucks. This one shifts and drives great, but it still has the problem where ya need to shift to 2nd before drive. More often when hot than when its cold.

repair shops

I tried three different repairshops. I only liked one. The first one was cottman trans. They told me that the computer spit out a bunch of codes and I would a rebuild ($1600. - $2600). Second one told me he thought it was a front drive seal but he wouldnt take the job because he hasnt had luck with explorer transmissions. The last one did a quick test drive and told me he thinks its stiffend seals that leak and dont let pressure build (also a rebuild $1900. - $2100)and wouldnt be sure until he scans it next week. I think im going to go with the last one.
